Why might an audience use the media?


Dennis Mcquail suggested that media falls into four main categories which cover the viewer’s needs. The media is obtained through technology which is increasing and is a wide variety for the viewer.

Internet
It is a big part of the media and is becoming more common as an alternative. It provides a wide scale of variety and therefore falls under all four of the categories of the viewers needs. In the sense of integration and social interaction it gives a substitute for a real life companionship through the communication and socializing alternatives it provides. It is a source of entertainment by the movies and personal clips that can be seen. It can give the user a worldwide knowledge of the world and society, providing interest, seeking advice and learning through reading, listening and watching. In the personal identify sense it reinforces personal values by offering sites which the user can purchase to fit their own lifestyle and personality.

TV
Television is also a big part of media as it is a connection worldwide. It provides mainly entertainment for the user filling time and relaxing. The user is able to value idols in the media and find models to fit their personal needs. The audience is able to find out information of events and society to suit their own needs and interests.

Newspapers and magazines
This falls under the category of information, informing the user through reading. It is a source to the news mainly and offers different opinions. It can satisfy the user as an alternative to TV in the sense of reading. The user is able to find out about different icons of which can be seen through different opinions. It can satisfy the entertainment side by provided relaxation and fill time.

Mp3
It is a personal item of which is mainly used individually. It provides personal identity suiting the users values and personality. They are used as entertainment for emotional release and relaxation. It can also be a source of information by satisfying the interest of the user and giving a sense of security.
