Conventions of a thriller film

The thriller genre is a very wide spaced and can combine with others genres. The Genre mainly involves a sense of mystery, suspense and tensions which are big parts of a thriller. It involves a high level of anticipation, uncertainty, anxiety, nerve-wracking tension and gives a sudden rush of emotions.
Thriller’s are fiction based including fast pacing, frequent action, and resourceful heroes who must thwart the plans of more-powerful and better-equipped villains.
The thriller genre can include the following sub-genres, which may include elements of other genres:
· Action thriller
· Conspiracy thriller
· Crime thriller
· Disaster thriller
· Drama thriller
· Eco-thriller
· Horror thriller
· Medical thriller
· Psychological thriller
· Spy thriller
· Supernatural thriller
· Techno-Thriller

The key elements which a thriller will include are-
· Chase scenes
· Psychological dimension – unknown
· Close up- human unknown
· Normalcy vs unexpected
· Darker side of life
· Injury/death
· Nightmare, disturbing
· Flashbacks (time)
· Credibility/ believability
· Distortion of reality
· Power

Camera shots

To add intensity close ups are used to give a dramatic meaning the sudden cuts of close ups will give the audience a sudden surprise.
Build tension into a scene by using contrasting situations. Use two unrelated things happening at once. The audience should be focused on the momentum of one, and be interrupted by the other. To add suspense showing the audience what the characters don’t see and constant reminders of this looming danger will build suspense.

Misen scene elements

Thrillers often take place wholly or partly in exotic settings such as foreign cities, deserts, polar regions, or high seas.
The heroes in most thrillers are frequently "hard men" accustomed to danger.
Thrillers also occur on a much larger scale: the crimes that must be prevented are serial or mass murder, terrorism, assassination, or the overthrow of governments. Jeopardy and violent confrontations are standard plot elements. While a mystery climaxes when the mystery is solved, a thriller climaxes when the hero finally defeats the villain, saving his own life and often the lives of others. If it 'thrills' then it is a thriller

Planning For Preliminary Task

The basis of the preliminary task was to experiment with different shots, storyline and editing for our real thriller opening.

We had to show as many different shots as well could to show variety but should be a simple storyline, such as a man opening a door, crossing the room and introducing another character.

After shooting and began the editing process which we found some errors. We found we had strayed off the original storyboard which affected the flow of the storyline. We had a lot of difficulty in producing the shots we planned effectively such as the birds eye view shot and panning as it was jerky.
We also noticed we had crossed the 180 rule which is very important as it confused the viewer.

After looking over the footage we have learnt to keep the storyboard, keep shots simple but have a variety, keep continuity and don’t cross 180 line.

Music Video Editing

Bon Jovi – Its my life

The music video has used some effective editing shots to fit the style of music. The video mostly consists of jump shots to add the dramatic feel and haste to storyline and the rock music. The jump cuts go from the boy running to the concert which has a fast cutting rate to show interruptions. The use of close ups and mid shots give a sense of contrast with two different places.

The camera cuts fit well into the beat of the song and repetition of a movement is used to emphasize to beats to enter the first chorus. The camera shots are very jerky to emphasise the importance of the beats.

At 0.54 – 0.58 are a series of jump cuts of still pictures of the boy falling. The camera shots are mostly mid shots, high and low angled shots to show him falling. The still pictures give a sense of low motion which fits into the lead up to the chorus.

Between 2.36 & 2.44 shows a series of jump cuts from the chase scene to the concert. This shows the haste effect of the cuts becoming faster. The instrumental part breaks up the song and pulls the viewer in with the intensity of the music and the running.

At 3.00 to 3.08 is a break to a heart beat sound in slow motion. This introduces the climax of the music and the video. The jump cuts again show the haste of the video and the peak of the build up of the adventurous aspect. The camera shots used involve low angled shots with panning from left to right to highlight the uncertainty of the jump. The shot is very unrealistic but adds to the climax of the song.

Mise-en-scene elements

Type of film - War action

Costumes
The costumes will mainly be military uniforms with combat colours. Also formal wear for more important and powerful figures in the film, eg president. The uniforms of the military will fit into the ww2 time zone.

Lighting
The lighting will mostly be black, white and grey showing the depressing environment. A lit up scene will show a more peaceful mood and the dark scenery will show the more depressing mood.

Action
The action scene will be obviously battle scenes consisting of a lot of violence and realism. The acting will involve a lot of emotion with graphic death scenes.

Make-up
The make-up will be camouflage colours giving the effect of being dirty showing the atmosphere of the environment being grim.

Props
The props will mainly consist of weaponry eg guns.

Settings
The film will be set in empty fields in a combat environment, mostly trenches and abandoned buildings as scenery. This will show isolation from the rest of the world being in a life or death situation.

Advert analysis

I think the Sex and the City film with the association with galaxy appeals the target audience of an older age. The target audience of the film is aimed at 25 + which links to the audience of galaxy chocolate. It is definitely aimed at a female audience, middle to upper class, relating to the actors in the movie.

I think the context of the advert falls under the category of aspirers as it is seen as a more mature, classy chocolate, which connects with the element of USA in the film. I think it could also fall under mainstreamers as it isn’t an expensive chocolate but is portrayed as maybe being more posh.

The audience of the advert falls under demographics as it is only aimed at a female audience. The consumer of the product is influenced by the advert through the idea of the actors in the movie being consumers as well.

I think the picture gives an idea of temptation of chocolate and is pun on the idea of buildings being made of chocolate. The visual picture corresponds with the film being set in New York. It fulfils the products desires to the attraction of chocolate. The background again represents the gender factor with it being pink. It think something that also attracts attention is the competition to win sex and the city prizes. This is also to draw in the audience through the movie appeal.

Overall I think it appeals well to the target audience fulfilling the needs of the consumer.

Camera Shots The Shining (bathroom scene)

The plot of the film is about a family moving into a hotel in an isolated area, the hotel is supposedly haunting. The hotel drives the father mad and causes him to attack his wife and son. The sequence I have chosen is of the wife in the bathroom with the man hitting down the door to try and get in.

The first camera shot at 0.07 and 0.08 is a close up panning down to show her picking up the knife. This is the start of the violent scene showing the first weapon. It gives the sense of safety for her so she could fight back. It also shows suspense for the viewer to see how she reacts.

The next camera shot a 0.24 and 0.25 shows a medium close up showing his whole body and the axe. This then pans from side to side whilst he is swinging the axe into the door. This gives a sense of suspense and fear for the women.

The next shot is at 0.37 shows a golden mean camera shot with the axe breaking through the door in the foreground and the women in the background. It is a medium close up and again shows her fear of him getting through the ‘barrier’ between him and her.

At 1.09 is the famous shot of ‘here’s Johnny’ which is an extreme close up his face. This shows the fear and horror of the attack. The expression on his face is very frightening and shows his madness as he is smiling. It emphasis the authority and power he has over her.

The last shot is at 1.17 which is a medium close up showing his hand through the hole and the knife cutting him. This gives the viewer a sense of relief that she can fight back and her innocence of having no control over the situation.
